Alonzo "Al" Griffin, 79, of Gooding, Idaho, passed away at home after a nearly two-year battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family and his beloved dogs.
Al was born on November 13, 1946, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to Fred D. Griffin and Lou Willie Griffin. He was raised on a 350-acre farm alongside his parents, siblings, and grandparents, surrounded by animals and the rhythms of rural life. One of his most cherished memories were of his grandmother, affectionately known as “Mama Love,” whose warmth and presence left a lasting impact on him. Al graduated from Tipton Street High School in 1965.
Music was one of Al’s greatest passions and gifts. He loved to sing and was known for his remarkable voice, becoming a standout vocalist in his school choir and later a member of a gospel choir. During his school years, he also learned to play the saxophone and continued to enjoy and develop his musical talents throughout his life.
In his early adulthood, Al moved west to Salt Lake City, where he discovered his true calling as a professional truck driver. He proudly drove for 32 years without an accident and was a dedicated member of the Teamsters Union.
Al met the love of his life, Patricia, in Bliss, Idaho. They were married in 1991 in Farmington, Utah, and shared 35 wonderful years together.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Griffin; his sons, Anthony Griffin, Cortez Griffin, Lateff (Kara) Alston, and stepson Dave Astle; his daughters, Lisa Griffin and bonus daughter Lindsay Bunger; and his sisters, Jessie (Thomas) Smalley of Georgia, Tina Cocroft of Milwaukee, and Minne Myrick of Mississippi.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Mattie Curton and Dorothy Parish; and his brothers, Willie Douglas and James Griffin.
Al will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. At his request, no formal services will be held. His family will honor his wishes by scattering his ashes in Mississippi at a later date, near his beloved parents.
