Betty Lou Butler, a cherished member of the Gooding, Idaho, community, passed away on June 4, 2025, at the age of 98.

Betty was the sixth and youngest child of John and Alla Hugentobler. She grew up in Acequia, five miles north of Rupert, Idaho. As the youngest child, she was deeply loved by her family and received a lot of attention. Throughout her nearly century-long life, Betty gracefully adapted to transitions in the world—from kerosene lanterns to wired electricity to embracing modern technology. In her 98 years, she bid farewell to many cherished loved ones. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy and Becky; her son-in-law, Charlie; and her grandchildren: Jared, Jenni, Amie, Kurtis, and Lara.

Betty was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; a faith she remained devoted to throughout her life. From a young age, she placed great value on education and hard work. During WWII, she began her collegiate studies at the Southern Branch of the University of Idaho in Pocatello—now Idaho State University. After two years at the university, she received her teaching certificate. At 20 years old, Betty began her teaching career in Gooding, Idaho. She met Dale Butler at Oakley’s Ice Cream Parlor in Gooding on her 20th birthday. Dale, the handsome senior class president, had the nerve to invite her to his senior prom! They later married and had two daughters.

Over the years, Betty Lou went on to earn her bachelor’s degree while balancing life as a mom, teacher, and farmer’s wife. She taught 5th and 6th grade for 35 years, touching the lives of countless students, and served as a source of inspiration for her grandchildren, who often turned to her for help with schoolwork.

Betty was a mentor to many teenagers and young adults. She welcomed troubled youth into her home and influenced others through her dedicated service in the Church.

She formed lasting friendships in the Gooding community. Her joyful spirit, faith-filled life, and generous heart will not be forgotten. She lived by the principles of hard work, frugality, and love for God and others.

     We love you, Betty Lou.
