Carolyn Nelson Chandler, age 90, of Wendell, Idaho, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2025 with her family by her side.
Carolyn was born on September 5, 1934 in Baker City, Oregon to Eva and George Loren Nelson as the youngest of four children; twin sisters – Rhoda and Ruth; and one brother – Jack. Carolyn moved to Wendell when she was five years old, where she first met her future husband – Rulon. She grew up on the farm helping her parents hoe beets and beans, and haul hay.
Carolyn attended school in Wendell where she played the drums in the band, participated in drama club and had the lead part in the high school play. She was honored to be chosen as the Outstanding Senior Girl. She graduated from Wendell High School in 1952 along with her high school sweetheart – Rulon Chandler. They attended BYU for one year and were married April 24, 1953 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Rulon was the love of her life and her best friend for nearly 70 years. They were eventually able to buy their own farm west of Wendell where they raised their family.
She was a wonderful mother to six children – one son and five daughters, who loved and admired her very much. She was a beloved grandmother to 22 grandchildren and 57 great grandchildren. Carolyn was proud of her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments and enjoyed watching them participate in sports, piano, dance and other activities. She also took great pride in her garden and yard, and taught wonderful homemaking skills to her daughters.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and gave many years of dedicated service as a disciple of Christ. She served as ward and stake relief society president, as a young women leader, and gave support to Rulon as he served in many years of leadership in the Church and community. They loved their many years serving in the Boise and Twin Falls Temples and as missionaries in Leeds, England and later Palmyra, New York.
Carolyn touched many lives with her quiet acts of kindness and love. She battled Parkinson’s Disease for almost 25 years and was an amazing example to us all of enduring to the end without complaining.
Carolyn moved from the farm to Grace Assisted Living in Twin Falls upon Rulon’s death, where she resided for just over two years and was visited by at least on of her daughters almost every day. We would like to express sincere appreciation to each of the caregivers at Grace, who helped take good care of her while she was there as well as to anyone who made visits to see her.
Surviving Carolyn are her children – Janice (David) Brown of Twin Falls; Robyn (Doyle) Hope of Wendell; Sandi (Scott) Luttmer of Hagerman; Jill (Jeff) Terry of Stansbury Park, Utah. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law – Tami Chandler; eleven grandsons, eleven granddaughters and 57 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her husband – Rulon Chandler; her daughter – Sharyl Chandler; her son – Kent Chandler; her parents – Loren and Eva Nelson; her twin sisters – Rhoda Chandler and Ruth Amon; and her brother – Jack Nelson.
A viewing for family and friends will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wendell and on Saturday from 10:00 am until 10:45 am at The Church.
