Charles Ryle Obituary

Charles William Ryle, age 87, passed away on May 22, 2020 of natural causes at his daughter’s home in Idaho.

He was born at home on the kitchen table in New Lima, Oklahoma, November 26, 1932 to Robert Clinton and Wincil Lee Ryle. “Charlie Bill” grew up in many places including rural oil fields in Texas and spent a few years in San Francisco during World War II.  After graduating high school from Konowa High in Konowa, Oklahoma, he attended college at Oklahoma Baptist University for his Freshman year before enlisting in the Navy where he served in the communication room on a destroyer during the Korean conflict. After his service, Charles married Annette Surber, attended Texas Christian University and started his family.

He began his professional life marketing computers when they were housed in whole rooms and required air conditioning to keep them cool enough to run. That career was highlighted by the many Executive Management positions that he held in several technology companies, which took his family all over the Western United States and Europe. After retirement, he purchased Santa Cruz Answering Service from his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Gitta Ryle. It was while working there he met his second wife Patricia Ellis.  They spent many years together in Santa Cruz CA, Brookings and Florence OR before moving to Spokane WA.

Charlie loved good wine, great food, golfing, and especially reading. He was well known for having more than one book going at a time and liked to read while watching the news. He was very well travelled and a life-long learner. His daughter, Cathy, is grateful for his wisdom; encouraging her to question everything and to look at things from different perspectives. “Dad I will miss you and I thank you for waiting on us. See you on the flip side!”  He provided to his son, Clint, the opportunity to learn technical skills, learn to run a small business and learn to manage people.  He taught son, Bruce, how to avoid lazy thinking and how to have a positive, logical outlook on life. His youngest son, David, got his love of jazz, the arts and great food.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brothers - Bob and Martin; and second wife - Patricia.

He leaves behind four children; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
