Doriene Smoot Knight, 81 years old of Filer, Idaho, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Twin Falls, Idaho, after a short battle with an aggressive thyroid cancer. She was with family at the time of her passing.

Doriene was born on June 23, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the youngest of four children of Edgar and Dora (Millard) Smoot. She had a happy childhood growing up at the Smoot Dairy in Centerville, Utah. She traveled extensively with her family to show their Jersey cattle at fairs and stock shows.

Doriene graduated from Bountiful High School in 1960. She attended Brigham Young University and Utah State University. She graduated from cosmetology school and then worked as a beautician and hair stylist in the Salt Lake City area. As a beautician, she enjoyed working with Larkin Mortuary.

In 1964, Doriene met Roger James (Jim) Knight. Jim and Doriene were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 10, 1964. Shortly after they were married, Jim gave Doriene the nickname “Sally” and it stuck for 59 years.

Over the years Jim and Doriene owned and operated dairies in Centerville, Utah; Gooding, Idaho; and Filer, Idaho. Their family dairy in Gooding was the largest registered Jersey herd in the state of Idaho.

Jim and Doriene welcomed three children – Julie, Wendy and Jeffrey. She was a second mother to many others throughout her life and was known as “Dodee” by those who considered her another mother and grandmother. Doriene loved being a mother and especially a grandmother. She loved her home and decorating it for all the holidays and particularly Christmas.

Doriene was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She held many callings in the church throughout her life. She served as a stake Relief Society president, a seminary teacher, and ward Young Women’s president.

Doriene was a proud American. She was the Idaho Federation of Republican Women’s President and the Twin Falls County Republican Women’s President for several terms. She always wore the American Flag pin on the lapel of every jacket.

Doriene was an experienced shopper. She loved to buy gifts for everyone she knew. Her favorite store was Deseret Industries. Her family nicknamed the store Doriene’s Inventory.

Doriene was an incredible cook and homemaker. She loved to cook especially for holidays and family gatherings. Anyone could stop in at her house anytime and there was always a full meal being warmed up on the stove. She was a rare lady who can claim she never used a microwave. Although she had a dishwasher, she preferred washing dishes in the sink and looking out her kitchen window.

Doriene had the ability to make everyone feel welcome and included. Wherever she went she had a gift to bond with people and to develop lasting relationships. She will be missed dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents Edgar and Dora (Milliard) Smoot, her brothers Stanley and Calvin Smoot, her daughter Wendy Jenkins and her grandson, Hyrum Smoot Jenkins.

She is survived by: her husband, Jim Knight of Filer; her sister – Caroldyn Francis of Fruit Heights, Utah; her children - Julie King of Filer, Jeffrey Knight (Sariah) of Elko, Nevada; her grandchildren- Heston Jenkins (Shaunie), Jasper Knight (Aspen), Betsy Stevenson (Luke), Justin Knight (Ivy), Molly Atkinson (Dallin), Joseph Knight, Allyson Dalton (Seth), Sage Knight, Karson King, Heber Jenkins, Sophie Knight, Lilly Jenkins, Saylor Knight, and Jimmy Knight; and her great grandchildren- Hyrum Jenkins, Kaisley Jenkins, Case Jenkins, Jubal Knight, Nevada Knight, Harvey Knight, Sadie Stevenson and Charlie Atkinson.

A viewing and visitation will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 10:00am to 11:45am, at the Filer Idaho LDS Stake Center, 840 Midway in Filer, Idaho.
