Edgar Hollinger, Jr. Obituary

Edgar, or Ed, was known as "Bub" in his early years, the youngest child of Edgar Wheeler Hollinger, Sr and Prudence Cora Hauser. He was born at home in Unity, Baker County, Oregon, September 13, 1930.

By 1940 his family had relocated to Myrtle Creek, Douglas Country, Oregon. His early years were marked by learning to work on the family homestead, shear sheep, milk cows, harvest plum/prunes from the orchard and of course education and sports at the local community school. At 11 years of age, Ed watched his beloved elder sister Lucille fatally injured in a farm accident.

In 1951, Ed met his lifelong love, Mary Diane Maszy, at the Douglas County Fair tractor exhibit and they married in 1952. Over the next twelve years, they welcomed four boys and a girl to their home. During these years, Ed worked the homestead farm with his father and traveled with a sheep shearing team to earn a living for his growing family. Eventually that was not sufficient and Ed joined the US Forest Service. Over the next 25 years, he served in the Umpqua, Wallowa-Whitman, Nez Perce-Clearwater, and Lolo National Forests. His primary work was building forest roads to facilitate access for harvesting timber and public recreation.

In 1979 Ed and Diane welcomed another daughter who sadly died two years later. In 1982 the final daughter was born completing the family of seven siblings. After retiring from the Forest Service in 1987, Ed returned with his family to Douglas County Oregon and settled in Oakland. Ed worked with many small farms shearing their sheep, goats or alpaca, joined shearing crews traveling the northwestern states. He also did some work in forestry and finally retired formally from Bayliner. Ed dedicated his retirement years to working with and enjoying time with his family, serving as a family history (genealogy) consultant, woodworking, and running his small farm.

In 2021 they relocated to Gooding, Idaho, to be closer to their children. Ed enjoyed playing football and wrestling during his high school years. He loved to fish and hunt and encouraged his sons to participate in these sports as well. He was known for his ability to work hard, build almost anything, and his years of service to his community and his church.

Ed is survived by his wife - Diane; his sons - Richard (wife - Rachelle), Daniel (wife - Kimberly), Gene (wife - Patty), Carl (wife - Camille); and by his daughters - Virginia (husband - Jim) and Rachael. He has 23 surviving grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He referred to his family as his kingdom here on earth and made sure we knew that he considered us all his greatest treasure, how very proud he was of the accomplishments of his "Hollinger Clan."

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025 at  4:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gooding, Idaho.

Ed will be laid to rest next to his parents, sister and daughter in the IOOF cemetery in Myrtle Creek, Oregon on October 16, 2025.
