Dwain Stirton, 85, a resident of Richfield, passed away as his home on Friday, October 17, 2025.
George “Dwain” Stirton, the son of George and Isabelle Stirton, was born on May 22, 1940, in Ely, Nevada.
Dwain spent the first years of his life on the C-3 Ranch in Ely, Nevada, where his dad was the foreman and his mom cooked for all the ranch hands. During his childhood, Dwain made several moves with his parents. They moved to Hansen in 1946, then Buhl in 1948 where Dwain graduated the eighth grade. The family then moved to Richfield in 1952. Dwain would go to work with his dad during the summer for the Big Wood Canal Company. Dwain attended school in Richfield until the 11th grade. Dwain left school at 17 and went to work for the canal company.
During this time, Dwain met Maxine Brown. They were high school sweethearts and would be married on August 15, 1962. Dwain and Maxine had their first son, Dan, in 1964 and a second son, Chad, in 1969.
Dwain continued to work for the canal company riding ditch, operating draglines, mechanic, and then shop foreman. Maxine worked for the Shoshone Sale Yard opening the scale gate and helping check out cattle after the sale. In later years, Maxine would save up her sale yard money to bring their grandchildren from Spokane, Washington, for two weeks every summer to go on the fourth of July camping trip.
Dwain retired after 44 years with the canal company. Maxine retired after 33 years with the Shoshone Sale Yard.
Dwain and Maxine celebrated their 63rd Wedding Anniversary on August 15, 2025.
He is survived by his wife – Maxine Stirton; sons – Dan (Tina) Stirton and Chad Stirton of Twin Falls, Idaho; grandchildren – Jordan Kunkel and Cassie (Trent) Champlin of Twin Falls, Idaho, Kendell (Kaitlin) Kunkel of Castle Ford, Idaho, Orrin (Lindsey) Stirton of Deer Park, Washington, Cody (Taylor) Stirton of Chewelah, Washington, and Brandon Jones of Cheney, Washington; great grandchildren – Braxton, McKenna, Hagen, Lawsyn, Paisley, Jovi and Ryver.
He is preceded in death by his father – George Stirton, his mother – Isabelle Stirton Northrop; his stepfather – Lyle Northrop; his brother – Conrad Morley; his sister – Carol Robinson and Margaret “Sis” Swenson.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2026 at 11:00 am at the Richfield Cemetery, Richfield, Idaho.
