Grace Eakin Obituary

Grace Irene Eakin, born on August 25, 1934, in Buhl, Idaho, passed away at Edgewood Spring Creek Assisted Care in Meridian on July 3, 2025. She lived an eventful life, characterized by her unwavering spirit, boundless creativity, and deep commitment to her family and community. She was 90 years old.

Grace was the cherished daughter of Harold and Frances Merle Hobson. Growing up in Idaho, she was instilled with the values of hard work and independence, which would guide her throughout her life. She is known to have said she had a wonderful childhood and spent a lot of time with her cousins.

She attended primary school in Gooding and graduated from Gooding High School. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from the University of Idaho in Moscow. It was during her formative years that Grace’s passionate nature began to shine, particularly through her involvement in 4-H, which not only shaped her youth but also influenced her efforts as a mother, as she actively worked with 4-H youth, including her own children.

On June 30, 1957, Grace married James Ivan Eakin in Gooding, Idaho, after a romantic engagement on Christmas Day, when they went to see the movie "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."

Grace’s career began with her youthful days as a pin setter at a bowling alley in Buhl. Before embarking on motherhood, she shared her love of learning as a teacher at Salmon High School and later taught home economics at Hailey High School. Grace's dedication to education continued as she served as a substitute teacher for the Blaine County School District. She said her first child was so cute she quit teaching to stay home full-time. Later she earned her CNA certification in 1984, which allowed her to care for others in her community. Grace was also known for her friendly demeanor as she distributed food samples at the Merc store in Hailey.

An active member of her community, Grace's contributions were felt far and wide. She worked at polling places during elections, served as secretary of the Blaine County Irrigation District for many years, and participated in the Bellevue Museum where her love for local history blossomed. As Worthy Matron of her Eastern Star Chapter and a member of Idaho Cowbelles, she forged connections and friendships that enriched her life and the lives of those around her.

Grace had a profound passion for the arts, excelling in various media such as ceramics, watercolors, pastels, and oils. She found joy in hosting art classes at her home in Bellevue, where she encouraged others to explore their creativity. Grace’s love of photography was evident as she meticulously created albums for her children, documenting their lives with special care, right up until the final album was completed this year.

Her artistic eye extended beyond her family; she found beauty in the world around her, capturing the essence of flowers, sunsets, local wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes through her lens. Grace traveled to many beautiful locations, including flights and cruises to Italy, Brazil, Hawaii, Alaska, and Norway, always embracing opportunities to explore new places, and she delighted in sharing these adventures with friends and family. Crater Lake in Oregon held a special place in her heart, and she proudly displayed a picture of it in her home.

In high school, Grace was honored with trips to Washington, D.C., for her achievements in 4-H. She was happy to talk about those trips and the people she went with. In 2017, she was named to the Wood River Valley Heritage Court, recognizing her contributions to her community and family. As "Lady Grace," she rode on floats in local parades, embodying the spirit of service and dedication that characterized her life. She was also Grand Marshal in the Carey parade one year.

Known for her headstrong and independent nature, Grace never hesitated to ensure that she could do things for herself, even as she faced health challenges. Her determination to attend appointments and share her stories—often with humorous detail— left an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Family members recollect the times she’d stop at a frosty stand on the way home from shopping and buy treats. She told one child if he stuck his head out the window of the moving car a large rock would come down from the sky and hit him. She told another child she would get car sick if she colored in the car while it was moving. She didn’t. Grace made the best flannel pajamas the kids would get for Christmas. She knit superior mittens and hats, too. She was known for always having a Kleenex handy due to a runny nose. She also had a habit of abruptly stopping in front of someone to take in the scenery. She helped family members pursue passions like spinning and weaving and cheese making.

Mom will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her unwavering love for her family, and her contributions to her community. She leaves behind a legacy of creativity, kindness, and resilience that will inspire generations to come.

Grace was preceded in death by: her husband – James; her daughter - Pamela Eakin Pierce; and her brother - Lawrence Hobson.

She is survived by: her sons - Daniel, Michael, and Patrick Eakin; as well as her daughters - Catherine Venosdel, Nancy Overturf, and Deborah Hepworth, who will carry her memory forward. She is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025 at 2:00 pm at the Hailey Cemetery followed by a gathering at the Eakin residence, where family and friends will gather to honor the remarkable woman who touched so many lives with her love and light.
