Ian Blaine Kunz passed away at the age of 66 in his home January 21st 2021.
He was born in Montpelier, Idaho, the eldest of four children to Blaine and Norinne Kunz on April 16th 1954.
Ian was raised in the Bear Lake Valley until his attendance at Brigham Young University graduating with a B.S. He was one of the first to be enrolled in the University of Utah MEDEX program where he was trained as a physician assistant. Ian’s first job as a PA was with Dr. Wolf in Idaho where he became the 16th registered PA in the state. After several moves to Utah and Arizona he returned to Idaho to work with Dr. Douglas Smith. He later partnered with several other PA’s to start a service, staffing emergency rooms with PA’s and was instrumental in establishing the value of PA's in smaller hospitals and underserved areas. In 2018 he was awarded the Idaho Physician Assistant of the year award.
Ian married his eternal companion Verla Jean Kunz, September 20, 1980 and was sealed in the Logan Utah Temple. Career pursuits took the small family to Arizona, Utah and finally Gooding, Idaho in 1991. Together Ian and Verla raised three boys and one daughter: Dirk, Alicia, Eric, and Sean. He was adamant that each of his children learn and develop their gifts even though he was quiet about his gifts for playing piano and sketching. Much of his free time was spent with his wife and children taking camping trips, hunting, or fishing around southern Idaho.
As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was able to serve those in the community in a number of different callings, including a two-year mission to Bern Switzerland. Ian set an example for his family and others by faithful service and compassion for others. He was a faithful minister to many of the members in his ward and had the honor of serving as a Bishop of Gooding 1st Ward.
