Janalea Marolf Obituary

JANALEA BETH MAROLF

(September 7, 1962 – April 22, 2021)

Some believe that writing an obituary should be key facts and statistics in a somber tone. That is not Jana. The truth of it is this: I do not know how to write an obituary. I am computer savvy and found that an Idaho woman had written her own. Her words sound just like something Jana would say, albeit not as eloquently:

Most of us try to avoid thinking about our own deaths, but people diagnosed with terminal illnesses don't have that privilege. As soon as they receive the bad news from the doctor, they are forced to confront mortality. It's a difficult thing to discuss let alone think about - some of the most exceptional can do so with reason and humility, like Jana (mostly) did. Usually, either family or friends gather and list every accomplishment in a timeline format, or they try and create a life story (subject to interpretation) that everyone would be led to believe she, when alive, had been infallible. Jana would not want everyone writing their memories of her awesomeness or various unbelievable (some half-truth) tales to fill a page in a newspaper. Accomplishments are for the living. Jana is now reunited with our sister (whom she missed dearly) and has no worries of things left unsaid or undone. Other than giving birth to two wonderful, lovable, and witty sons (Richard and Andrew); Jana was an amazing big sister, she was an even more amazing Grandma, and she was a loving and caring daughter, Jana was genuine to the core. — Diagnosed with cirrhosis, Jana knew it was a matter of time. She had made the decision to get approved for a liver transplant and worked very hard to meet the requirements. There were many obstacles, however Jana’s humor and wit were always available and inspirational.

Jana always did the best that she could. She made crazy decisions, jokes and comments – But, even as her sister, I didn’t see all that she was until the very end. What you saw, what she said … was everything she was. She didn’t always have the answers and yes, she made mistakes. She was the most genuine person I have ever known. She lived her life her way, did the best she could, and kept her smile through it all (and made you smile as a result). She had a huge heart. She really never intentionally hurt anyone and went out of her way to ensure that any misunderstandings were cleared up quickly.  She genuinely enjoyed life to the fullest.

We are all truly blessed to have had her in our lives. She was loving, helpful, happy, and really made her life (and the lives of those around her) worthwhile.

If you think of Jana and would like to do something in honor of her memory:

- Be proud of, brag and let your ‘kids’ know how important they are to you.
- Turn off electronics and take your ‘kids’ out ... talk to them about their hopes and dreams.
- Call friends and family, tell them how they have had a positive effect on your life.
- If you smoke — quit.
- If you drink — remember, moderation is so important.
- If you drink and drive — stop.
- Forgive (even when you believe they don’t deserve it).
- Volunteer.
- Be a reason for someone to smile.
- Be Yourself.

Her wish was for her body to be donated to science so others can learn.  A celebration of life will be held on a later date.
