Joyce Scanlon Obituary

Joyce Charlene (Herrick) Scanlon, 88, of Nampa, Idaho and formerly of Gooding, died July 18, 2018 at her residence.

Joyce was born Sept. 14, 1929, in Ogden, Weber County, Utah to George Wright Herrick and Eliza Ann Stone. Her childhood was spent mainly in the Ogden area and she often told stories of visiting family in Star Valley, Wyoming, and Thayne, Idaho. As she completed high school, she worked for a time in Sun Valley Idaho and then followed her parents who had moved to Gooding, Idaho. It was here, while she was working night shifts as a telephone operator, that she had a blind date with a young man from the area, Claude Scanlon. The two enjoyed mixed dating with their friends in town, and as each paired up and were married, it only seemed natural that these two also would wed. They married on August 11, 1949 in her parent’s house on Colorado Street.

The new family lived for a time in Jerome and Ketchum until finally settling back in Gooding, where Claude ran his own petroleum delivery company for the next 25 years. Joyce was active in the PTA, a local bridge group, her LDS Ward and spent much of her time embroidering and producing many hand-made items for friends and family. Her work often won ribbons in the Gooding County Fair. She also worked for a time in the Gooding County Treasurer’s Office, was Planning and Zoning Administrator and served on the hospital board for years.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Norma Georgene Gray and Sybil Barton Clays; as well as a brother, Gerald Dee Herrick; a grandson, Matthew Lynn Scanlon; and a granddaughter, Janae Scanlon.

She is survived by three sons, Owen Wright Scanlon (Hailey, Idaho), Rory Rahn Scanlon (American Fork, Utah) and James Claude Scanlon (Boise, Idaho); and one daughter, Cheryl Anne Case (Nampa, Idaho); also surviving are 16 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23, 2018 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gooding, with visitation at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to a favorite charity or the North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding (ncm-c.org).

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service - Gooding Chapel.
