Kenneth C. Coates

     Kenneth Charles Coates, age 91, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 11, 2026, in Hagerman, Idaho.

     Ken was born on July 2, 1934, in Carey, Idaho, to Shelden William Coates and Winifred Wythel Ralls. He grew up in Idaho, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for community that guided him throughout his life.

     In 1953, Ken married Mary Eyleen Shackleford. Together they had six children.

     Ken moved to Las Vegas, where he became a well-known and respected executive chef. His passion for cooking and leadership in the kitchen defined much of his career. He later returned to Idaho and fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening and operating his own restaurant, the Ken’s Roadrunner Café’ in Bliss, Idaho. It was there that Ken met Jean Louise Miller (Jeannie) with whom he spent the remainder of his life.

     Ken had a smile that was truly infectious. He loved fishing, golfing and cooking for his family. He was an amazing friend and was well known for driving around town just to check on his friends.

     We will miss you cruising the town on your 4-wheeler, visiting us at work (visiting means pulling up and honking or revving your engine until we came out) calling us when “soup’s on!” and “What time you gonna be here sweetheart, I have dinner ready for you” So many enjoyed your love for cooking.  Thanks for all the great memories!

     Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dan Coates; his sister, Wilma Coates; his daughter, Krista Merrill; and his son-in-law, Royce Merrill.

     He is survived by his sweetheart, Jean Louise Miller (Jeannie); his children: Karen and Angel Ponce, of Idaho Falls, Idaho; KJ and LuAnne Coates, of Hagerman, Idaho; Kraig and Sherry Coates, of Memphis, Tennessee; Kurt and Becky Coates, of Shelley, Idaho; and Kori Coates, of Boise, Idaho; his grandchildren: Steven, Sheridan, Nick, Erik, Brandon, Garrett, Jenne, Kyla, Molly, and Brianna; and his beloved great-grandchildren.

     A celebration of Ken’s life will be held on Friday January 30, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at 1000 Springs Resort in Hagerman. Family and friends are invited to come enjoy food and share memories. Flowers can be sent to 361 Salmon St. E. Hagerman, ID 83332.
