Laurence Smith Obituary

March 27, 1936 - Jan 2, 2024

Laurence Smith, 87, passed away at his home in Bliss, Idaho. He was born in Hagerman, Idaho to O.S. “Bud” Smith and Ethel Clifford Smith, the fifth child of seven children.

Laurence first attended Bliss elementary school through fifth grade, and then middle and high school in Hagerman, graduating in 1954. In high school he played football, basketball and excelled academically, especially in math. With his outgoing personality, he had many friends.

After high school, Laurence attended the University of Idaho, and Idaho State College. During the Vietnam War, he chose to sign up for the Army’s six-month training and six years of Ready Army Reserve. He was sent to Fort Ord in CA and Fort Lee in VA. Laurence received an award for Marksman, Rifle, M-1. He was honorably discharged.

Laurence had various jobs throughout his life. Some of the time we worked with his father farming, raising trout in more than thirty ponds, and the operation of Smith Sand and Gravel.

Some of Laurence’s hobbies were hunting, fishing, playing pool, photography, and thrifting. Many good buys were generously given to family and friends.

Laurence loved to tease and teach things to his nieces and nephews. Nicknamed “Uncle Laurence Baby”, he left them with fond memories of his teaching them to water ski on a grassy slope, shoot pool, tie fishing flies, and how to run the Michigan loader with the gravel.

Laurence had a caring heart and loved talking to people. One friend wrote online, “Laurence was a good man who never knew a stranger. He entertained and educated with his forthright opinions on all matters.”

Laurence is survived by his two sisters, Patsy Banning and Vernita Talbott both of Hagerman, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Maurice and Howard Smith, sister Myrtle Leach, and infant sister, Glenna.

A graveside service will be held at the Hagerman cemetery on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at Hagerman Senior Center.

Donations may be made to the Hagerman High School Alumni or a charity of your choice.
