Mabel Irene (Whelan) Glick passed away November 21, 2025, at the age of 89 in Wendell, Idaho surrounded by family.
Mabel was born in Ventura, California on October 14, 1936, to Leo and Ellen Whelan. She was joined by her younger brother Frank Whelan a few years afterward. Mabel attended grade school in Gooding, Idaho and later attended school in Filer, Idaho. At the age of 10, she met a young local boy named John whom she helped work on his toy farm. John also taught her how to ride a bike; however, he forgot to teach her how to get off the bike. Mabel and John graduated from Filer High School in 1954 and were married shortly after in October of 1955. The following year, son Clyde (Pete) was born. John and Mabel later moved to Twin Falls where daughter Joyce came along, making the family complete.
While raising her kids, Mabel worked for the Twin Falls School lunch program. Her children benefited from the occasional extra cookie at lunch. Mabel later worked at Anderson Lumber Company as office manager in Twin Falls and retired after more than 20 years. As the only woman in the lumber yard, most of the men soon figured out that she ruled the roost!
Mabel and John did spend several years apart but remarried in June of 1980 with their children Pete as Best Man and Joyce as Maid of Honor. The couple moved to Fairfield, Idaho and operated a contract mail carrier route for many years. They were both active in the Fairfield American Legion Post.
Fishing with friends and family occupied much of the family’s free time. They explored many of Southern Idaho’s lakes and reservoirs in search of trout. Countless hours were spent in a boat or on a lake shore telling fishing lies. One constant in her life was her fondness for having a cat in the house.
Late in life, Mabel suffered from dementia, but now her long struggle is over. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband John Glick, parents Leo and Ellen Whelan, brother Frank, and grandson John. She is survived by her son Pete (Lynne), daughter Joyce, four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Samantha Marshall for superior medical care, Stonebridge Assisted Living in Wendell, Idaho for providing a safe residence and Hospice Visions for respectful end of life care.
A memorial graveside will be held in the Spring.
Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service - Gooding Chapel.
