Verna Kodesh Obituary

Verna Dale (Burgess) Kodesh, age 81, passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2020 with family by her side, after a month-long battle with complications caused from a fall.

She was born December 16, 1938, in Shoshone, Idaho to Harold and Vera Burgess, joining her older brothers, Clifford and Ted, and her older sister Elva. Her younger sister Norma arrived shortly afterword, making the Burgess family complete. She was raised and received her education in Shoshone. She had many fond memories growing up and formed many lifelong friendships.

In the fall of 1951 she was picking potatoes making .08 cents per sack when she met the love of her life James (Jim) Kodesh. Jim enlisted in the Marine Corps in March of 1952 and served 3 years. Upon his discharge he came back home and walked into the Manhattan Café where Verna was working as a waitress.

Jim knew it was Verna, and asked her if she was the one he was looking for. They have been by each other’s side ever since. She married Jim on January 1, 1956. Throughout her life with Jim they moved to Kansas City, Missouri and eventually back to Idaho and settled in Buhl, where they continued raising their sons, Jimmy and David.  Her grandchildren grew up having her as a very prominent part of their lives.

She kept herself busy working the lunch counter at Sunset Bowl, prodding for worms, and helping with various duties within many bowling leagues, to ensure she could spend many very deserving hours with all 9 of her grandkids. In February of 1998 Jim and Verna legally adopted Tarah and Kendra and solidified their loving family.

Her sister Norma later came to live with them and created an everlasting bond until Norma’s death. They spent many hours doing crafts, working puzzles, playing cards, and traveling to various bowling events.

In the fall of 2008, a reunion fulfilled Verna’s life dream and she was so extremely grateful. She was an extremely proud mother and grandmother and never stopped loving any of her family. She spent 64 ½ blessed years walking through life with Jim by her side.

She was preceded in death by her parents, younger sister Norma Ainsworth and great grandson Matthew Jones.

She is survived by her husband James Kodesh, three sons: Jeff (Nadine) Chance, James Kodesh Jr., David (Susan) Kodesh. She is also survived by grandchildren Jason (Jessica) Kodesh, Melinda (David) Snyder, Casie (Travis) Spearing, Courtney (Jeremy) Fearheller, Tarah Anderson, Kendra (Mack) Wilson, Bryce Osborne, Alicia (Matt) Moxham, Emily Kodesh, 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild as well as many other beloved family members.

Verna had a loving heart and gave the best hugs. She will be missed by all who were blessed enough to know her.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30am Friday, July 17, 2020 at Shoshone Cemetery, Shoshone, Idaho.

There will be a Celebration of Life at Buhl City Park following the service.
