Virginia Marie Monroe, 93, a resident of Shoshone, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024 at her home in Shoshone.
Virginia Marie (Shaffer) Monroe turned 41 on June 10, 2024. If you knew her then you knew. Virginia was born to Carrie and Frank Shaffer at their home on July 4, 1931. Growing up she believed that everyone celebrated her birthday with fireworks only to find out that wasn’t the exact truth, but that didn’t stop her from telling everyone the latter.
Virginia grew up in Shoshone and for the first 10 years of her life she was an only child. Her dad used to say “She was the first, the worst, the best and the last.” Well, that was all true until the birth of her brother, John in 1941.
She graduated in 1949 from Shoshone High School. She went and lived/worked in a few different places (Boise, California, Utah and Montana) while working for Pacific Bell as a telephone operator.
Idaho was always home though, especially Shoshone and when it called her back, she went to work at the McFall Hotel and also at the Manhattan Cafe.
On Halloween 1952 she went on a double date where she met Dale Monroe. The two had whirlwind courting and decided on May 4, 1953, to drive down with another couple and get hitched down in Elko, Nevada. Dale worked for the Idaho Transportation Dept. and because of his job it took the couple to live in places where a job(s) needed to be accomplished. In 1957 they were back and settled in Shoshone and welcomed twin boys Dale Franklin (Frank) and James Blake (Jim) Monroe.
Virginia was a very active lady and enjoyed a plethora of activities (camping, arrowhead hunting, gardening, knitting/crocheting, reading and sports watching to name a few). With her being such a huge sports fan; especially baseball; the “greatest” home-run(s) she ever came across was when her grand girls slid into home plate. Like other sports Virginia knew and watched, life earned her extra innings for her with the addition of her great grandchildren. And if that wasn't an all-star play, she got one more grand-slam with a bonus of a great great granddaughter. Virginia lived a very full and rich life.
Virginia is survived by her son -Jim (Laurel) Monroe; her granddaughters - Jen (Casey) McCabe, Christina Monroe, Chelse (Lyden) Christensen; her great grandchildren - Kellin Short, Kaiden Short-Alexander, Kiran McCabe, Jaelyn McCabe, Tiryon Christensen, Annie Christensen; also her great, great grand-daughter - Eskadilla Randall-Short.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son - Frank; her husband - Dale; and her brother - John.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on June 29, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Shoshone, Idaho. Burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the First Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service - Shoshone Chapel.
